2009 Summer
China's Globalization in Shanghai

|
I am a proud Longhorn at
The University of Texas at Austin. I studied
abroad in Shanghai, China in the summer of 2009. My favorite memory
from my time abroad was when a group of friends and I went to the
antiques market in Shanghai because not only did we discover new
aspects of the Shanghainese and Chinese lifestyles, but also managed to
practice a lot of Chinese and even take pictures with the vendors. |

| Lindsay Baird Vanderbilt University 2009 Summer Beijing Chinese Language

| My home institution is Vanderbilt University. I studied abroad during Summer 2009
on the CET Chinese Language in Beijing, China. My favorite memory in Beijing was
sitting on the front steps of my school at night and philosophizing with random
strangers, even the school guard. |

| Amanda Barnard Vanderbilt University 2008 Fall China's Globalization in Shanghai

| I am a senior at Vanderbilt University, double majoring in economics and East
Asian studies. I spent fall semester 2008 in Shanghai, China. My favorite
memory of Shanghai is eating dumplings and camping in the mountains. |

Lewis & Clark College
2008-2009 Fall, JanTerm, Spring
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a senior at Lewis
& Clark College in my hometown of Portland,
Oregon, where I'm majoring in Foreign Languages (Chinese and French)
and illustrating the school's student-run newspaper. During my stay at
CET's Beijing Language Intensive program during Fall, Winter, and
Spring terms of 2008-2009, I traveled to twelve different cities around
China, climbed and yoga'ed on the Great Wall twice, and ate street food
wherever I went. |

Erin Callahan
University of Mississippi
2009 Spring
Hangzhou Middlebury Program

|
I am a senior at the
University of Mississippi where I major in
International Studies and Mandarin. I chose to study abroad at
CET/Middlebury School in Hangzhou, because I had heard extremely
positive things about the rigorous and comprehensive nature of the
program's academics. I felt that the program surpassed everything I had
heard. While in Hangzhou my language improved immensely, I formed
lifelong friendship bonds with some of the Chinese roommates, and I
came to understand China on a more profound level than ever before. |

Central European Studies in Prague

|
I attend Franklin
& Marshall College, and studied abroad for my
spring semester in Prague, Czech Republic. My favorite memory from my
time abroad was definitely in the beginning where we were split into
groups and were sent off on a treasure hunt of specific items
throughout the city of Prague. It was very enchanting because there
were so many things to see, and getting lost allowed me to truly
connect with this majestic city. |

University of Georgia
2009 Summer
Art History in Florence, Italy

|
Attending the University
of Georgia as an Atlanta resident is not the
hardest high school to college transition, so going through CET's
Vanderbilt in Florence program as a non-Vanderbilt student really
allowed me to branch out. Always being known and identifying myself as
a shy person, I found myself loving the process of meeting new people
and learning about the dynamics of another college campus. I admire
Vanderbilt students for their intelligence and dedication to their
schoolwork. While at times the summer work- load seemed overwhelming
with all the distractions of a new, foreign city, I did enjoy and now
appreciate the studious mindset of this CET program. |

|
I call the FAMU Visual
and Performing Arts program home. Prague, Czech
Republic released me back into the States. My favorite memory from my
semester abroad is eating potato dumplings at the bar beneath the
school every day, slowly gaining the love of the old barmaid that ran
the place. |

| Allison Dove Rhodes College 2009 Spring ICCS Catania

| I
am a Greek and Roman Studies major at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. I grew up in a small, country town outside of
Nashville and moved to Memphis to get a new view of the world. This passion to explore the world and learn
about different cultures and people also led me to study abroad with the ICCS
Catania program, where I was able to live in community with Sicilian students
and fully experience their culture. In
my time abroad I not only was able to learn about Sicily's struggle to find its
true identity as it was settled by the Greeks, the Romans, and others long long
ago, but I was also able to sunbathe on the clear-watered beaches of Catania,
eat tasty "Pasta alla Norma" sprinkled with ricotta salata, and stay up late
laughing with Sicilian students. It is
an experience that changed my life forever.

| Nicolyna Enriquez Colby College 2009 Summer Art History & Italian Studies in Siena

| I
am
a third year at Colby College. I am a
art history major and a religion minor. I attended the art history
program in Siena during summer 2009. I love Italy and I am actually
returning for
my spring semester abroad. My favorite
memory from Siena was sitting at a contrada dinner with my host mother,
her
son, my roommate, and David. The dinner
took from 9 pm until 1:30 in the morning (a very typical Italian meal)
and it
was so relaxing, fun, and interesting that it made a mundane event
(like
dinner) extraordinary. |

Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a graduate student
in Computer Science at the University
of
Massachusetts-Amherst with an interest in becoming bilingual. I studied
Mandarin at CET in Beijing during the summer and was happy to discover
a variety of learning opportunities. In addition to language
development, ping pong coaching from a Chinese instructor was an
outstanding experience for me. |

Beijing Chinese Language

|
Before partaking in the
CET Beijing 2009 summer intensive
language
course, I had completed a spring semester abroad in Shanghai; also a
really great city. I'll be returning to the States this fall to finish
my last year at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Picking a
favorite memory is a bit overwhelming given the myriad unforgettable
moments I've had during my stay in China. However, undoubtedly one of
the best moments was waking up from a nap on the Jinshanling part of
the Great Wall then watching the sun go down behind some of the most
impressive mountain ranges I've ever seen. Absolutely spectacular! |

Kenyon College
2009 Spring
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a senior at Kenyon
College majoring in economics and
minoring in
both Chinese and biology. During spring 2009, I attended CET Chinese
Language Program in Beijing. One of the many highlights of
the
program
was our trip to Xi'an in which we were able to see more of the culture
and use the language skills acquired in class to communicate with
locals and our roommates. |

Sydney Hess
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
2009 Spring
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a senior at
UNC-Chapel Hill majoring in Chinese and
Political
Science. I recently attended CET's Chinese Language program in Beijing
during spring 2009. The best memories of the term are
centered on
food
and the activity of eating such food in question. When I was sitting
with my roommates and classmates at a table, all of us around a
lazy-Susan piled high with dishes that I still can't really remember
all the names of, relaxing from a week of work, I learned the most
Chinese and I learned the most about Chinese culture. But it wasn't
really learning... it was just eating and fun. |

|
I am a senior at Lewis
& Clark College in Portland,
Oregon,
studying History and Mandarin. In my free time, I practice 16th and
17th century European swordsmanship and other martial arts. I spent
Spring 2009 in Beijing on CET's Chinese Language program. My favorite
memories from my time in China are from the two days that I spent
climbing the beautiful Wudang mountains, known both as sites of Daoist
worship and the legendary birthplace of Taijiquan. |

2009 Summer
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a non-traditional
student from the University of
Michigan who
thought that studying abroad would be impossible. I was very excited to
have the opportunity to study Chinese language this summer through the
CET Beijing Chinese Language program. Not only did my language skills
improve dramatically, but I was also able to experience Chinese culture
first-hand through CET activities and my daily life in Beijing. |

|
Maura Hogan
University of Georgia
2009 Summer
Art History in Florence, Italy

|
I am currently a senior
at the University of Georgia majoring
in
Journalism. Originally from Newport, Rhode Island, I seize any
opportunity to travel to different places which ultimately prompted my
decision to study abroad in Florence, Italy this past summer. The
CET-Florence program provided me with an amazing experience in which I
was able to meet new people, learn about fascinating topics surrounding
art history and Italian culture, see numerous sights, but most
importantly, the program allowed for a great deal of self-exploration.
My favorite memory from my time abroad is fairly simplistic. It was the
first day I decided to explore the city myself, trying to use my map as
few times as possible, simply observing my surroundings and taking it
all in. It was so refreshing to me because I am usually always rushing
somewhere or trying to go from point A to point B. That day alone gave
me the chance to really see the wonders of Florence and a newfound
appreciation for where I was. |

the trip to the Great Wall. We could see for miles around, and it was
the most clear, cool and sunny day of the entire summer. I felt as if I
was on top of the world. |

I attended
the Chinese Language Program in Beijing. My best memory in China was
weekend trips to numerous places inside and outside Beijing. I really
appreciate all of the support from roommates, teachers, CET staff, and
classmates in China. I would like to do whatever I can do for the
future students of CET. |

| Kristen Kagetsu Massachusetts Institute of Technology 2009 Summer Beijing Chinese Language

| I am a sophomore at MIT majoring in mechanical engineering and planning to minor in Chinese. I was very excited to spend this summer learning Mandarin at the CET Beijing Chinese Language program. Living in Beijing not only allowed me to improve my Mandarin skills dramatically, but also helped me learn more about my heritage. This was my first time studying abroad but everything from learning how to get around the city by asking locals for directions to chatting with my teachers and roommate made it a fantastic experience.

attended the Beijing Chinese Language program where I was able to learn
an unimaginable amount of Chinese, experience the rich culture, explore

|
I attend a small liberal
arts school in rural northeast Ohio,
Hiram
College. I studied abroad with CET in Hangzhou and Beijing, China in
2008-2009. My favorite memory undoubtedly was traveling to a school for
children of migrant workers on the outskirts of Beijing to chat with
them in Chinese and to give them an opportunity to practice speaking
English. |

Central European Studies

|
I am a senior at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring
in
Communicative Disorders. I attended the Central European Studies
Program in Prague, Czech Republic. Studying abroad in the Czech

full of adventures. I loved immersing myself in another cultural and
traveling. Plus, I made life-long friendships with other CET students.
CET helped make my study abroad experience a memorable one. |

Eric Li
Yale University
2009 Summer
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a sophomore at Yale
University and potential Economics
major. I
spent a summer at the CET Beijing Chinese Language Program with money
provided by the Richard U. Light Fellowship from my university. This
was one of my best summers ever as I met so many interesting and fun
friends despite it being my fourth visit to China. From witnessing the
immense changes that modernization has brought to Beijing over the past
decade to having fun talks with my teachers, I feel all of these
cultural experiences made my first time studying abroad an
unforgettable one. I am now definitely looking to visit China again in
the near future and perhaps look for an international business job
opportunity there. Let me know if you have any questions! |

Oberlin College
2009 Summer
Beijing Chinese Language

|
About to begin the
second half of my third year at Oberlin
College, I
am currently pursuing an East Asian Studies major with a concentration
in Chinese Studies. I just recently attended CET's Beijing Summer
Language program and will continue to study the language at 400-level
this fall. Some of my favorite experiences during my time abroad
include striking up conversations with "Lao Beijingers," poking my head
around old-school hutongs, and venturing out into the country (whether
it be CET's Yuxian trip or backpacking Inner Mongolia with friends). |

Luke Mohr
Washington State University
2008 Fall & 2009 Spring
Harbin Chinese Language

|
I attend Washington
State University and major in Political
Science,
Psychology, and Chinese. I spent a year abroad in China and Taiwan and
attended CET Harbin in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Good memories in
Harbin are too many to count but the uniqueness of Harbin is that it
represents the "developing" side of China so that one can truly immerse
in traditional Chinese culture, interact with the warm and friendly
Harbin locals, and experience one of the lesser-Westernized cities that
China still has left. |

| Daniel Riff Washington University in St. Louis 2009 Spring Jewish Studies in Prague

| I am currently a senior at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in history. I participated in and thoroughly enjoyed the Spring 2009 CET Jewish Studies program in Prague. One of my favorite memories is returning from freezing (but wonderful) Poland and wandering around the Easter Market in Old Town Square as spring arrived.

2009 Spring
Harbin Chinese Language

|
I am a senior at the
University of Mississippi double
majoring in
International Relations and Chinese. As a requirement for graduation, I
studied abroad for a semester in Harbin, China. The one thing that I
will never forget about that semester is the camaraderie that developed
between the students, Chinese roommates, and even the teachers. Even
during class while learning, we were able to have fun and enjoy
ourselves. |

Hunter Ross
Rhodes College
2009 Summer
China's Globalization in Shanghai

|
I come from a small town
in Arkansas, and I now attend Rhodes
College,
a small liberal arts school in Tennessee. Deciding to study abroad in
China's largest city, Shanghai, during summer 2009 between my junior
and senior years was a huge break from the usual slow-pace of life in
the South. At CET-Shanghai I was able to get a first-hand glimpse of
the booming business center of China, while staying connected to
society and Chinese culture with the patient help of my local roommate. |

2009 Spring
Central European Studies in Prague

|
I am a senior at
Washington University in St. Louis. In
Spring 2009, I
studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic on the Central European

2009 Spring & Summer
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a junior at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel

spent the spring and summer in Beijing, China studying Chinese
language. My favorite memory is traveling to Chengdu on spring break
with four friends, where we climbed up Mt. Emei to spend a night
freezing under an electric blanket, to have water bottles stolen by an
evil monkey, and to have the time of our lives meeting kind Chinese
travelers! |

Sarah St. Lifer
Bennington College
2009 Spring
Photography in Prague

|
When I
applied to CET for the photography track in Prague, I knew I was going
beyond what was expected of my college career.
About 16 other
Bennington College students studied abroad during spring 2009. Although
it was not a popular choice, I knew that my experiences would help me
develop my work as an artist. While taking a photograph in Brno, a
gypsy chased me down the street, snapping imaginary pictures of me and
my friend. To him, that atmosphere was home; to me, it was a world
waiting to be captured. |

| James Sturm Kalamazoo College 2008 Fall Beijing Chinese Language and 2009 Spring Harbin Chinese Language

| I am an International Studies major from Kalamazoo College, and I studied abroad in both Beijing and Harbin, China. My favorite memory is divided between teaching Chinese classmates how to salsa dance in Beijing's Sanlitun, and spending Friday nights relaxing with Chinese and American classmates in the spa, fending off Harbin's fierce winter cold. It just doesn't get much better than that.
|

| Nancy Tan Vanderbilt University 2008 Summer Beijing Chinese Studies and 2009 Summer China's Globalization in Shanghai

| My name is Nancy Tan, and I am a senior at Vanderbilt University this year majoring in Mathematics and East Asian Studies and minoring in Economics. I studied abroad with CET twice, once at the Beijing Chinese Studies Program in the summer of and 2008 once at the China's Globalization in Shanghai program in the summer of 2009. One of my favorite memories abroad was getting goosebumps as I watched the Bird's Nest light up on August 8, 2008 at 08:08:08pm in celebration of hosting the Summer Olympic Games. Epitomizing the greatness of my newfound love of China, it. was. EPIC.

Emory University
2009 Spring
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I
am a junior at Emory University, and I studied abroad in Beijing this
previous spring semester. I had so many amazing experiences in China
that it is difficult to choose one favorite memory; however camping on
the Great Wall is pretty high on the list. Although it was torture for
me to have to wake up at 4:50am the next morning after six hours of
hiking (we got lost) the day before, it was worth the pain to enjoy
this majestic piece of history in the early morning hours. |

Yuki Wakamatsu
Soka University of America
2009 Spring
Beijing Chinese Language

|
I am a senior at Soka
University of America and I went to CET
Chinese
Language program in Beijing during Spring 2009. My favorite memory from
my time in Beijing is that I was able to talk with people who haven't
been abroad, who do not believe in religion, who haven't been close to
any foreigners. Interacting with these people absolutely made me think
where I come from, how I became who I am today, and what are the
differences/commonalities we have. It was not necessarily fun time to
live in Beijing; however, I learned to develop my sense of appreciation
for human being in front of me, no matter how different we may look. |
