Program Description:

Jewish Studies in Prague
Uncover the Jewish Experience in Prague and throughout Central and Eastern Europe

Embark on a remarkable journey through Central and Eastern Europe's Jewish past and present.

For a personal look at this program, check out this podcast interview (mp3 format) with spring 2009 Jewish Studies in Prague student Daniel Riff from Washington University in St. Louis.

What better place to begin the adventure than Prague, home to one of Europe's oldest Jewish communities and a center of the contemporary European Jewish renaissance. Prague's thousand years of Jewish history, its Jewish Quarter with six surviving synagogues, and a growing Jewish community make it an excellent setting in which to explore Central and Eastern European Jewry. The Jewish Museum in Prague contains one of the largest collections of Judaica in the world and pays tribute to the richness of Czech Jewish life and to those that perished during the Holocaust. Jewish Studies students utilize the Museum's extensive library and records for their coursework.

CET students participate in the Jewish community through activities with the Czech Union of Jewish Youth as well as through community service projects. In no other study abroad program will you have the opportunity to study the rich history, culture, and literature of Central and Eastern European Jewry through intensive courses as well as travel and hands-on participation in the community. You'll become a part of the rebirth of Jewish life in Prague.

Your journey will be intense, challenging, exciting, and rewarding. We invite you to take the first step.

To learn more about the journey to come, read a response paper following the Poland Traveling Seminar written by fall 2008 student Francine Schrank, and read a reflective essay about the Jewish Studies program written by summer 2007 student Efe Balikcioglu.  More reflections can be found in the Alumni Reviews section.
